For many years, I have been fascinated by the Japanese yunomi. Taller than it is wide and without a handle, the yunomi invites you to experience its warmth, weight, and texture directly through your hands.

I see the vertical surface as a canvas, where impressed textures in the clay and the unpredictable marks of wood firing create a quiet dialogue between material, flame, and time.

In the Japanese tradition—particularly in Hagi-yaki—a yunomi is often finished with a small foot ring and a distinctive cut beneath the base. To me, this cut represents a gateway: a symbolic opening that creates a dialogue between my ceramic work and my wider artistic practice.
